a poetic story of international love which never happened... 25 poems.

that moan like a saxophone john thompson 9781536879346 Books

I picked this beauty up when I discovered the author on Allpoetry.com, I was already immediately enamored by the title alone but the words in the book proved to be far more of an experience than what I had possibly imagined. There are poems in this book, which is a quick and enjoyable read, that really lay into you with the author's emotions of having to deal with both the pain and ecstasy of love from afar. What starts out lighthearted with mentions of laughing at a passing family of hedgehogs and over the phone kisses begins to slowly disseminate into heartache and pain of loneliness as distance begins to take it's course and ends in a curse laden emotional ending. This is love poetry, true and simple, and a hell of a showing from author John Thompson

Any book that begins with a family of hedgehogs crossing the road has already won me over.
John Thompson’s “that moan like a saxophone” explores an intense love challenged by intense distance and it does so with the wit, honesty, sensuality, and intelligence one familiar with Thompson’s body of work expects, that “new language/that we translate. The heave, /pitch, the thrill, the length. /it all has a definition.” The book captures the uneasiness that lies under all we do, and all we love “that what if/won’t be quiet.” And yet we bravely soldier on, as Thompson invites us to do in this gallant, generous book.

I was marveled by the intense, raw emotions in his poetry! Each poem more powerful than the next! I cannot wait to get his other book!
There are few people who one can look to as a true poet. John Thompson is a mixture of Auden and Keats for the Twenty-first Century. His poetry reads with simplicity, yet in actuality it reaches the depths of the sea and the heights of the universe. It takes you wherever you want to go. In fact, I suggest just that. Go on the journey with Mr. Thompson and see where he takes you.
this small book of poetry is another excellent book of John's incredible writing ability, talent, pleasurable, emotions !!! "that moan like a
saxophone'" is an indication of a book of love. The poetry is one of the best written love poems--short to long--flowing love emotes from this book !! my friend read this and decided to order a copy for herself !!
I ate this raw in one sitting. I know every little bit of these images, as I think most people do, because we have been there; so much in love that every tiny fragment of a memory is recorded in poetic form to be savoured when the other is not there. Such a beautiful narrative. John Thompson's poetic instinct is awe inspiring and just so very pleasant to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a romantic at heart. Read it with your legs up after a long day and with a nice cup of tea next to you.
I have this ) It's a great short book of poems by one of my favorite poets. Check it out!
This book of poetry can be read i one sitting, but why do that! Slowly read and devour what is there. Think about it, and read again for new meanings. This is one of those books you'll go back to time and again.
